This would be a dessert type food, to go along with free feeding Orijen dry cat food. Just about 1.5 ounces a day, once a day until he finishes it. It would be half of a 3 ounce can, or 1/4 of a 5.5 or 6 ounce can. Some people say wet food only, but having the Origen dry and then a good wet too, that should be pretty good? Any help that you think of would be good. I definitely want to stay away from meat-by-products, but he loves the Fancy Feast grilled Salmon. He only weighs 10 pounds and never goes outside, and is three years old. Thanks!
Well the reason some people recommend an all wet diet is that cats are designed to get their water in food. They are not thirst driven and when kept on dry, they will have about 50% less water then they should. This can result in kidney disease, renal failure, UTI, crystals and more. Especially since you have a male cat, this is essential. Males have a narrower urethra, so they are more prone to blockage from the crystals. Proper hydration is a must and it just can't be achieved when feeding dry.
Orijen is not bad food, but the dry I just can't recommend at all.
Fancy feast is a low quality food. It's made with cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy and rice. These are not something a cat would eat in nature, therefor it's not designed to process it. The carbs in grain cause diabetes and obesity over time.
I would recommend an all wet diet of high quality grain-free food. by-product should also be avoided as you mentioned. Some good brands are Wellness CORE, Merrick, EVO, Nature's Variety, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Felidae and others.
This way your cat will get the proper hydration to keep his urinary tract healthy and will also get the proper meat based nutrients that are suitable for a carnivore.
Here are some great sites on cat nutrition, that opened my eyes.
Good luck!
