how can i stop my kitten climbing and scratching my walls and furniture?
my kitten has taken to scratching the furniture and walls. he has climbed the walls as high as ceiling and slid back down! he has a scratch post which he show no interest in and is positioned next to his favorate area for climbing, i have tried puting has paws into the post when i catch him scratching and also tried squirting him with water, but he quite likes that and just drinks it! does anyone have any other sugestions?
Cats learn by association. As a rule they don't like loud noises so I tend to clap my hands loudly and close to them with a loud 'no'. You need to do this consistently and it can take some time.
Cats can be very clever and mine will wait til I'm out of the room and then try to scratch things! Keep an ear out and keep on with the clapping. You can use the water spray thing too but it gets a bit messy!
Please don't declaw your cat. It is cruel and unnecessary!
Encourage use of the scratching post. I got my cat interested by playing 'chase' with a toy on a string around the post. She soon got the idea that she could scratch there and it was fun. I'm now on post 4 (she has worn the others out!).
