Have a LeBistro PetMate drinking system/dog won't drink?
Our 2 dogs, one golden and one lab/chow mix refuse to drink from the LeBistro pet watering system. If unfamiliar with it, it looks like a regular water bowl, but it has a large water cooler type bottle on the top-so they have clean, fresh water available.
The lab/chow absolutely refuses to drink from it, and the golden will do it if I coerce him (basically, I bribe him).
How on earth can I get them to drink from it? They will go days without water if all they have to choose from is this thing. They hate it!
I wouldn't just give up on him using it before he actually tries. This is like training a dog to do a new trick. How can he do it, if you give up so easily. He probably read the fear in you, because you are afraid he is gonna go with out water for too long. Just relax and don't get all stressed out over this. I use the Bistro watering system also, I also use the Bistro food despenser. I have 4 miniature pinschers and 2 cats that had never seen or used one before. All of them would use it, except my adult male. I sat next to it off and on for a couple of hours. Every time he eyed it, I told him it was all right and told him to get a drink. I tried again before I went to bed and he was eying it so longingly. I knew he wanted a drink. So I sat next to it before I got ready for bed. The whole time I sat there, I talked to him and he finally gave in and took his first drink from it. I praised him every time he even came close to it. Then I praised him even more when he finally used it.
This is just another training exercise. Don't give up before he shows you he can do it. Every time he looks at it, reassure him, but stay relaxed. Praise him everytime he steps closer to it. I know he can do it. Make it a routine. He will eventually catch on and realize it is a good thing for him. Another thing that might help. Try also to put a little bowl of water next to it. When he finishes that little bit of water and wants more, he may just eventually start drinking from it because the little bowl wasn't enough for him. When training a dog new things, you just can't give up on them. I hope this helps out.
