Catnip Mat
So I bought an insulated, wooden shelter for the feral cats -- should I put a food bowl on the first level?
I feed them Purina Naturals and Fancy feast. But right now the shelter with built in insulated sides, a self-heat fleece mat, straw and a sprinkle of catnip are a few feet apart from the bowl.. Would putting them together increase the chances of it getting some use ?
Although I'm going to leave the house out regardless, if anyone has any experience on this it would be great. Thanks !

Oh, Yes, the overhang ! The building is a large covered hutch, as pictured, situated against the apartment wall and under the eves of porch which also stays relatively dry.
I wish I did know their regular hang-out ! Probably a porch or shed dugout near some of the homes behind our strip of woods.

Yes, to attract the cat(s) food will help. I have about the same setup for my porch kitty except that I have it wrapped in a tarp and surrounded by straw. It must be pretty snug for Buster because when he comes out to say HI his fur is warm. (It was -18F this morning so our visit was short.) I put his food and water beneath the overhang I made for the shelter and this usually keeps the food from getting snowed on. We have lots of feral and stray cats here where I live and the rest of them must have reasonable shelter as they appear to be in good condition. (I suspect a lot of them get under the trailers and stay warm near the furnaces.) I have a feeding station under the porch and Buster tolerates the other cats coming and going, but he won't share his house! You will probably get a cat to take up residence if it is warmer than where it is living now. It is also possible to get several to curl up together in there, especially if they are related. Is your shelter a feral villa? Mine is and has two levels too.
Additional detail:
I really like the design of this shelter and the small opening barely allows for Buster to get inside which keeps him safe from predators. Since I feed the wild cats in another location they don't even bother coming onto the porch.
