Would giving my cat catnip cause him to urinate on the sofa when he never has before?
I have had this cat for about a week, and until just now he has been a model kitty. He goes to his litter box and doesn't destroy things. I gave him some catnip to play with on his scratching post and he loved it!
But I just noticed that he has peed on the sofa and all over the cushions. Would the catnip have this effect on him? What gives?
Is it just urine or is he spraying his territory? There is a distinct odor to that, much stronger than their urine.
There may be a female in the neighborhood who has recently gone into heat.
Or he may smell another male in the neighborhood.
Or maybe he just wasn't comfortable spraying until now.
