This is my cats first christmas with us and he is not the most well behaved. He jumps and attacks everything! I wrapped the presents and he opened them all! I haven't put my tree up yet since I already know what is going to happen. (Attacking the shiny balls and climbing the tree) Is there any thing I can put on or around the tree to keep him from going after it??
Keep in mind me and my roommate work during the days and won't be there to spray him everytime he gets near it.
There is a real danger for kitty's with Christmas trees. Among them broken glass ornaments, chewing with lights or wires, drinking the water, eating tinsel.There are some solutions. Use non glass ornaments. Plastic or other options are available. If you use a real tree, make sure there is plenty of water for it at all times to keep it from drying. It is VERY important to cover it so kitty does not have access to drinking it. There is tree sap, chemicals used in the growing, insecticides etc. Do not use tinsel. For some reason cats often eat it. It can get caught inside and block their intestines, This can result in emergency surgery or even death.Look at different types of lights. There may be some that are safer. If you want you can wrap electrical tape over the wire providing an extra layer of protection if bitten. The larger bulbs are not as appealing as a food.. Anchor tree by stabilizing it in a way so it is impossible to knock over if climbed. You may trim off the lowest branches, makes more room for presents anyway and avoid hanging dangling objects from lowest branches. Avoid the temptation. Artificial will be less likely to be eaten but if you use a real tree do not spray snow or fragrance on it and pick up loose needles often. Keep it watered so it stays fresh and holds needles. Merry Christmas to you and kitty. BTW Keep Poinsettias and mistletoe away from cats. Very poisonous.
