Grooming Deshedding Tool
Grooming for a long-haired dog?
I'm planning on adopting a dog, probably a Golden Retriever, but I'm still in the research stage. I've been looking at the FURminator, which I'll probably get, along with a separate finishing brush like this one (http://www.petco.com/product/112138/PETCO-Pin-and-Finishing-Combo-Dog-Brush.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductList_Dog_1-_-PETCO%20Pin%20%26%20Finishing%20Combo%20Dog%20Brush-112138).
I know it's ideal to groom a Golden pretty much every day, but I was wondering if it's different with the FURminator since it is a "deshedding" tool and I'm not sure if loose hair has to be removed daily. How many times should I use the FURminator or a similar product, let's say, once a month or week? Also, should I use the brush above on other days or after the FURminator, too? Would you recommend a different type of brush? And for people who purchased their FURminators on Amazon, eBay, etc.: do they work okay (sort of worried about fakes)?

I would highly advise against the furminator for a Golden. It's an improper tool for their coat type and often causes more harm then good. The fuminator is a generalized striping blade that ends up just cuting the coat off and doesn't distinguish between top coat and undercoat. They can also cause severe grooming burns if used too frequently or improperly.
I also wouldn't recomend any pin brush with plastic or rubber tips on the pins. Those tips, that are only designed to make you think it's kinder for your pet, end up causing damage to the hair shaft and break the coat. In addition to that often times the pins are too short to go thru the entire coat, so you end up just brushing the outer coat and leaving mats underneath that the brush can't reach. They also don't hold up to the rigors of regular grooming and you'll end up having to buy a new one in a few months. The best way to learn about grooming a Golden would be to contact an Golden Retriever breeder. They'll know what tools work best and they can show you proper grooming techniques.
