How do I get my potty training 3 year old to poop in the potty?
My son is 3 and has been using the potty for the past 2 months, but he refuses to poop in the potty. He prefers to use one of his hiding spots and needless to say we still have to use diapers because of this. Has any one else had this problem with potty training? What to I do about it?
I have a daycare and this is actually really common. Peeing in the potty comes relatively easy, but pooping for some reason takes extra time. What I do is keep an eye on their I have to poop signs, usually hiding somewhere and squatting down. When I see this I ask "are you pooping?" and they usually grunt "yes" I say "why don't we go do that on the potty" if they are really against it I say ok but next time we'll give it a try. If they are ok with it I say lets go come on. Even if they poop mostly in their diaper and a tiny bit in the potty I make a really big deal about it, we tell everyone and we'll even call mom or dad. Just watch their cues, and bring them to the potty. Another thing I do is ask them if they know what it feels like when poop is about to come out. To make them more aware of the sensation.
