How many scratching posts do I need?
My mother has two female cats and a fairly large house; her cats scratch in several places. Do we need a scratching post for each corner they scratch? Should each cat have her own post? Also, any thoughts on the angled scratcher vs. the post?
Declawing is not an option. Not only is it inhumane but it is illegal in my country (although my mother lives in the US where it is legal).
Two would be good for a large home. You wouldn't need one for every spot they like as long as you can convince them of that.
Watch to see what angle the cats seem to like to scratch the most. Some like more vertical, some like a flat horizontal.

A scratching post does not sharpen claws, it wears them down.
You can get cat clippers and keep nail trimmed to lessen damage
