well im going on Holiday in two weeks and i have a cat already and i have arranged for her a place to go while im away (only for a week) but recently, for about a week and a few days now, a young cat, just out of kitten hood has been passing through my garden at least 6-7 times a day. i often feed her tuna on an afternoon (much to the distaste of my own cat) and im worried about her since she is so thin and she doesn't trust anyone, not even me although she will allow me to stroke her while she eats the tuna, and im worried that she has gotten used to this treatment and that it may be her only source of food, (she is thin and she has no collar) and i cant get her into a cattery or anything or get a Friend to feed her while im away because i live quite far away from all my Friends and have no neighbors. im just worried about her and want to know if anyone has any good advice?
If you see a new cat outdoors, you may think he's lost. But with many feral cats living as wildlife, and many pet cats allowed outside (without collars), proceed cautiously. Rescuing may not be necessary or even the best decision. Unless the cat is in danger, observe him for a few days to ensure he really needs help. First you want to determine if this is a pet that goes out, a feral cat, or a lost cat. Since you say it's thin and scared, then it's probably feral and has no owner.
Alert neighbors or anyone living nearby about this cat. A lost indoor-only cat is very frightened and will hide even from the guardian. Also alert neighborhood children -- they know the local pets.
In the winter months you'll also want to make sure they have adequate shelter -- under a porch, a dog house filled with straw, an accessible shed or outbuilding. Cold is not a major problem. Cats grow heavy winter coats just like other wildlife, but have no house-building skills and can die from hypothermia if they get wet and cannot dry off. If you don't want to feed the cat regular cat food you can also feed it raw chicken and turkey necks with bone, preferably grinded, beef or chicken broth, and have fresh water outside at all times. Give the cat canned tuna 2-3 times a week, not daily, to prevent any mercury poisoning and stinky diarrhea. Whether you keep the cat inside or outside, spay/neuter the cat so it prevents overpopulation of stray cats in the area, and fixed cats are easier to manage.
