I have a male rat and I wanted to get him started on litter box training. Here are the only things I know so far:
* Use different litter from in the rest of the cage
* Put droppings into the litter box
* Reward with treats
Here is one of my questions:
* What size of litter box do I need for a large, male rat? (8+ inches, not including tail) Should I get more on the bigger/roomier size?
Here is a concern...
I bought a small litter box and put different bedding in it. I put some droppings in the litter box but the next day I woke up, my rat had taken ALL the bedding out of the litter pan, spread it all over his cage and then somehow got the litter box off and tossed it across his cage (it's 3 levels). He also goes to the bathroom 2 different places and I don't want 2 litter boxes... Help????
By the way, I'm using Aspen Bedding (kiln dried) as the bedding in the litter box.
WEll, my rats are both litter trained. One is one month one is one year. The younger one took a while longer but it's okay. It took me about a week for the older one and about 3 weeks for the younger one. Here are the steps:
. Get a litter tray
. It really doesnt matter what bedding is used, but i use aspen.
. fill tray with as many poopies as possible, letting them know this is the place to go.
.clean out the whole cage and put new clean bedding in.
.put tray in clean cage.
.I rats go in the tray praise them and give them a treat.
.If rats go anywhere else, scold them by yelling No! or Bad! and remove of the droppings
.Do this until they finally start using the tray and there u have it! A litter trained rat
-there may still be accidents when trained so just scold them and remove of the accident.
It is very unlikely u will get them to pee in the litter box, but it os still less of a mess!
