I have a muscular male cat who is almost a year old and weights about 14 lbs. He has recently learned how to unlatch "The Safety Collar" that he's been wearing for nine months now. The Safety Collar is designed to unlatch when it gets caught on something so the kitty doesn't get strangled or stuck. The latch is still working fine, but I've found it unlatched in the same place several times now (he appears to be doing this on purpose). The collar doesn't seem to bother him while it's on and he really needs to wear a collar because I live in the city and if he gets out the back door, I need to take every precaution that he gets back to me (no, I haven't microchipped yet, that may be next in addition to his collar). Any ideas? Is he just to big for this type of collar? Would it be safe to buy him a sturdy collar without the safety latch, or could he get hurt? I'm careful to adjust his collar so I can only slip two fingers under it. Thanks!
the latch collars are too easy to get out of for most cats, so i'd suggest a 12" collar that has an elastic loop in the middle. it serves the same purpose as the safe cat collar, but cats can't get it off.
my girl kitty figured out how to get those off too, so we just buy the elastic collars now. these collars are easily found at petsmart or just about any pet website.
