What is the best way to introduce a medium/large size dog and a cat so that they can live together?
I am recently married and I have lived alone with my inside-only cat for the last four years. My wife has also had a chow/golden retriever-mixed dog for the last four years. Her dog is very well behaved and enjoys the run of the house and the yard via a "doggy door", but she seems to despise any neighborhood cats that come around the house and makes aggressive displays whenever she sees them. I am unwilling to just give up my cat, but I do not want to put her in a situation where she will be unhappy or possibly be hurt or killed. What is the best way to introduce these two and what can I do to arrange a harmonious living arrangement between them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cats and dogs communicate differently, which means that they misinterpret each others signals until they learn to understand the others body language. For example, a dog will lift his paw gesturing that he wants to play, but a raised paw to a cat is a threat. Dogs are sociable animals that have a pack hierarchy, whereas cats are independent animals who are more concerned about territory, than their place in the pecking order. Never underestimate the importance of territory to a cat. It is the source of their food, shelter and love, so they can become very upset if they feel that a newcomer may be trying to take it from them. Your cat may need lots of reassurance from you at this time especially if she has no previous experience of dogs. Remember too that the dog is larger than her and will be seen as more of a threat.
Make sure that your cat's food and litter boxes are in places that the dog cannot access or somewhere high, as this will make her feel more secure in case she worries about being attacked by the dog. Allow the cat access to the majority of your home, whilst the dog is kept in a separate room or confined area. This will reassure your cat that they are still in control of their territory, whilst the dog's scent will be transferred to the area where you are keeping her. When you take the dog out of that area, allow the cat in there so that she gets to "meet" the dog by smell first. Scent is very important to animals. After handling the dog, allow your cat to smell your hands as this will help familiarise her with the dog's scent and make it seem less threatening.
The dog will be aggressive towards neighbourhood cats because they are not part of her pack. The trick with getting a dog to accept a cat, is that it needs to view them as a pack member, and she will take her cue from how your wife and yourself treat the cat. Keeping the dog on a lead, you can gradually begin introducing them face to face. Take things slowly and let your cat dictate the pace. If she reacts badly to the dog or hisses, don't force the issue. Make sure that when they are in the same room that your cat has access to high places, where she can feel safe, and observe the dog at the same time. Praise her when she's calm around the dog, offer food treats so that he will associate their presence with good things. Same goes for the dog when she's well behaved around the cat.
Be patient, it will take a while for them to accept each other. The web sites below offer further advice on introducing cats and dogs.
