I've always had shorthaired cats but I adopted a longhaired kitten that is now a massive 15 lb longhaired 1 year old cat and I was wondering if anyone had any particular brushes, combs or other tools they couldn't live without.
Right now I'm just using a slicker brush on him, but his hair gets very thick on his rear end, underside and around his neck. I've tried my dog's Furminator on him and it doesn't do a thing.
Luckily he doesn't really mat and when he does, they're small and easily pulled apart. His coat reminds me of a Maine Coon or a Siberian cat. Any advice on tools would be appreciated.
I also wanted to mention that I'd rather not take him to a groomer just to have them tell me what kind of brush to use. The nearest pet store with groomers is half an hour away.
A metal comb is essential. It's the best tool you can use on a longhaired cat. Lifting up layers and using your slicker at the skin and brushing outward will suffice until you get a comb. Similar to sectioning and lifting human hair when trimming, lowering in sections and combing the next inch of coat. Start at the lowest end of his bib working your way up, the lowest end of his hind shanks moving up toward the tailhead, and ensure his underarms and inguinal area are thoroughly combed, as mats love to form there.
Pet Edge has great grooming supplies. The comb with 2 different widths between teeth is best, using the wider side (coarse) for mats, eventually combing through with the finer side after you can pull the wider coarse set side completely through the coat. http://www.petedge.com/product/Weekly-Special-Steel-Greyhound-Grooming-Combs/55564.uts
