What is the difference in Salmon and Chicken in cat foods?
When it comes to Salmon and Chicken flavor in dry cat foods, is one better than the other? I just don't really understand.
There may be a preference with your cat, but when you look at the differences between the lists of the ingredients between the two, you will likely see little differences.
Remember, ingredients are listed in order of amounts, so if you are at the third or fourth ingredient, it most likely is only a very small amount anyway.
I looked at one salmon flavored cat foods, and salmon was listed as the eighth ingredient (Nutro Max). In fact, chicken is the first ingredient.
The thing to remember about cat food, is that you really need to look at the ingredient list, not the label since the label requirements are set by an organization which all companies are supposed to follow. So a beef flavor cat food can have beef far down in the list of meats rather then the first ingredient as one might expect.
My bottom line? I look for meat as the first ingredient. And the food my cats get has chicken as the first ingredient, not chicken meal or meat meal, etc.
