I have a harness for my cat but he won't let me put it on him so what would be the easiest way for me to do this?
It takes time and patience. It is easier when you start when they are kittens. Just put it on him and let him wear it around the house until he sees it will not hurt him. Do this every day until he accepts it as normal. If you are having a time getting it on, slide the harness as high up on your arm as you can get it, when your cat isn't looking. Pick a time when he is normally calm, even drowsy. Rub his ears, "incidentally" covering his eyes with your hand as you do so. Slide the harness down and over his head with your other hand. If you have someone else on hand to fasten it around his middle (not too tight!) as you keep petting and talking soothingly to him, it will be less stressful.
The fear may come from you trying to put something over his head, which he isn't used to, or cinching something around his middle. Cats have a natural aversion to anything confining.
My cat loves his harness. It didn't take him long to learn that the harness meant he was going outside, and he would come running as soon as he saw it, and could barely hold still while I put it on him. Then he would jump into my arms to be carried outdoors. I didn't want him to develop a habit of running outside when he saw an open door, so I trained him that he has to be carried out and in. I started his training as soon as I got him, when he was 5 months old.
You may have better luck getting him used to a collar first. If you plan to take him outdoors, do not use a safety collar. It could release if he pulls too hard. However, never leave a non-safety collar on an unsupervised cat.
I use a safety collar on my cat when we travel. It has his name, and my cell number on it. This is just in case he would ever get lost. He doesn't really like going anywhere in the car, but he still seems to regard his collar as jewelry, lol. He will strut around and pose whenever I put it on him.
Cats are funny, and what works for one, may not work for another. You have to be sneaky, and/or make it worth his while to cooperate. Treats, praise, cuddles, whatever form of bribery works best with your little bundle of fur.
