Toilet training your cat?
This question is directed to people who already have their cats toilet trained. When your cat has gone to the bathroom using the toilet, is there cat pee on the seat? I'm talking about after training is done and cats have been using the toilet for a few years, so basically once they know what they're doing. My mom and dad don't really want me to train my cat to because they think that there will be cat pee on the seat. And also, can you give me some pros and cons of teaching your cat? How did you train your cat? Does Litter kwitter work, and is it worth buying? What are some cheap ways? I'd prefer litter kwitter to be a last resort. Thanks in advance!
I adopted a toilet trained cat from a friend. No, he did not pee on the seat. They balance all four paws on the front of the seat and do their business in the toilet bowl.
You train them by putting a clear plastic pan between the toilet bowl and seat with a little litter in it (most pet stores sell these). After they establish using this you cut a small hole in the middle, gradually increasing the size of the hole until the cat is forced to perch on the seat to do its business. Once that's done, you get rid of the pan completely.
As far as pros and cons:
Only pro: no litter box
The biggest con: Cats have an instinctive need to bury after they go. My cat would scratch around the toilet and the seat, usually knocking the lid down to destroy the evidence. You have to make sure that seat is always up, and this is a BIG con if you leave them alone overnight or longer.
My cat was trained as a kitten and used the toilet until he was 3 years old. He developed cystitis and was in the hospital for 5 days, where they obviously gave him a litter pan. When he came home he never used the toilet again.
Having experienced it, I would never train a cat to use the toilet. It's much easier to train them to use a litter box since it's more natural to them, and I'd rather scoop out a litter box once a day than worry about the toilet always being accessible.
