Mircochip and a collar?
Im getting a 6month Kitten from a rescue centre soon, Ive only had older cats before, the kitten will be micro chipped. Do you think I need to get a collar and ID tag aswel or is the chip enough? As she gets older and more adventerous I would be worried about her going missing, but im also concerned about having somthing around her neck, even though it would be a safety collar. What do you think?
I would rather go with a micro chip and a collar.
Simply because not many people (beside vet and pet shelter staff) have the possibility to scan a cat to check if it carries a micro chip.
And a collar is still the most visible sign that a cat has a owner who is missing his pet and will increase the chance to get the cat back if she went missing.
And pet loving people are less tempted to adopt a roaming cat if she carries a collar since that states the cat has most likely a caring home.
If you are concerned you can check at your local pet supply store the different versions of cat collars.
There are versions with an elastic who will slip over the cat's head if she gets caught in bushes or so.
An there are break away versions. The safe away buckles opens as soon as the cat pulls. You can test different versions at the store by pulling the buckles open. Some of them need a bit more strength, some less. All cat break away collars are opening as soon as the force reaches 3 or 5 kg (6 to 10 pnds).
If you select one of the easy opening ones your cat will definite be safe outside with her collar.
Adjust it tight enough that her paws are safe from tangling and lose enough to allow her free breathing. If you can push easily one finger or two fingers if you are slim between her neck and the collar it's fine.
You can also let her wear the collar inside the house for one or two days to check if everything works well and her paws are safe before allowing her to go outside with her collar.
