Do those pet nail trimmers that find the quick for you really work?
I have the worst time trimming my chihuahua and pom/chi's nails, do the nail trimmers that find the quick for you and show where it's safe to clip really work? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Black nails are the worst, when I worked as a groomer and kennel help we always tried to pass the buck on that one. A good rule of thumb is that the quick is going to be *roughly* equal in all his nails, so if he has a lighter color nail or one where you can see the quick then cut that one and leave the others just slightly longer.
Best piece of advice I can give is to have a professional do his nails, then just use your nail clippers to "tip" them once a week. You can also use an emery board specially designed for dogs to keep up routine maintence.
Also buy a product called "QwikStop", since the quick has a rich blood supply you'll want a powder to stop the blleding.
And consider yourself lucky-- the breeder who sold me my basset did his nails the day before and accidently hit the quick. Then when we took him to the vet for his check up, the tech was an idiot and scared the bajeezus out of him while trimming his nails. Now he has a nailphobia. 
He'll only let me cut his nails, he puts up a huge fuss when groomers or vets try to do it.
