Urban myth. You heard wrong. The laser you can buy over the counter is not strong enough to do the job but it IS strong enough to damage you eyes if you look into the beam. Industrial strength lasers CAN cut materials because of the power. Industrial lasers are used by jewelers to cut and etch ID numbers into diamonds. So, YES, it is possible to cut a string with a laser, it is just that the little ones available in a store are simply too small to do the job.
