Tips on making a small at home animal rescue center? Cat treats, toys, etc?
We have a abandoned building in our backyard that we would like to use to protect homeless animals and find them new adopted parents. We are focusing on cats, that's mainly the animals that wander around here. Kittens are born and sometimes in our woods. . . well killed by larger animals. It makes us sad and we are trying to end it. The economy is bad right now and we are trying to save money too. Any economic friendly suggestions to make cat treats, toys, etc?
If you interviewed 1,000 cats on their favorite treat, I bet 90% of them would all meow, "Mrrowll...arrrrrrl!" Translation: "CATNIP!!!" You should definitely make a small garden filled with these tasty treats. You can buy the seeds easily, and all they need is a little water and shade. Start them off my planting them in pots indoors. Once grown, move them outside. Try to hide them from the cats, or someday you'll find your garden...pulverized. Trust me, I've had the experience.
Toys, of course, can be made easily. Some could be made of crumpled paper, rubber bands (for some reason some cats love the smell of them), hair bands, and bits of yarn. More time-consuming ones consist of fabric stuffed with cotton balls, added with fabric ears and a tail made out of ribbon. But I would go with the easier, cheaper ones.
Beds can be made easily from a simple basket padded with a blanket. A simple pillow would do just fine.
Collars can be made at home easily. Simply tie a ribbon around the cat's neck, and maybe string beads on it spelling out the name, phone number, and address.
Litterboxes are not a must. They can go outside, and cats are smart enough to bury it as well. You don't need to worry about it.
I think saving the cats from the streets is a wonderful idea, but there are some problems that you will have to face as well. All kittens must be checked for rabies, worms, and other diseases. They must have their shots, which can cost a lot of money. They will also need plenty of food and water, and much attention. Also, most people would think it would be safer to get a kitten at an animal shelter. Still, if you put up posters and tell many people about your animal rescue center, I'm sure people would soon learn to trust you and would rather go to your shelter to adopt a kitten into the family.
