How do I get my kitten to get used to his collar?
He keeps pulling it up to his mouth and chewing on it, does that mean its too loose? I think he's going nuts, tumbling around trying to take it off. Should I take it off and try when he gets older?
Should I get him a harness instead? Sometimes we let him outside in the backyard and there was one day where the fence was broken and we didn't notice.. so he escaped. Luckly, he came back. I just want something on him that shows that hes not a stray cat.
Leave the collar on him, he will adjust. It takes cats longer to adjust than dogs. Also, keep it tight enough that you can only get two fingers between the collar and his neck. And keep a check on it every few days to make sure it isn't too tight since he is a kitten and still growing. If it has a bell on it, you might want to get one without a bell. My cats never liked that bell on their collars. It interrupts their stalking abilities!
And lastly, make sure it is a break away collar for cats. This is so he doesn't get stuck on something inside or out. If he does, instead of choking himself to death trying to get loose, the collar will break loose and free him.
