My cat is getting quite old, she is 13. She has been wearing a flea collar on and off for most of her life, and its always done a good job with keeping fleas and ticks off of her and its never had any adverse effects on her or her skin. Plus its hard to afford front-line or similar products when you have multiple pets.
She has lost the hair directly under the collar on her neck. It must have happened gradually because I never found tufts of hair or anything. Why could this be? Like I said, she's never had any reactions to wearing a flea collar. Could it just be from years of wearing a collar (any type)? Could it just be because she's getting old? The skin where there is no hair is perfectly fine, not red or irritated or anything, just hairless.
By the way, its definitely NOT because her collars were ever to tight, I've always made sure at last three of my fingers fit under the collar whenever I put one on her.
It could definitely be an allergy, even after so many years. It's possible that since she's older, her little immune system isn't up to the levels it used to be....have you noticed any other symptoms? Like perhaps sores around her mouth or under her chin? Loss of hair generally is related to something irritating the skin, and since it seems to be located directly beneath the collar, I would say that is almost certainly the culprit. I would perhaps try to let her go without the flea collar and see how her hair comes back, because without the hair their it could become irritated. Also, maybe you could try a different collar, they make natural ones now- that might be a little easier on her. Good luck!
