How much does it cost about every month to keep a healthy pet rat?

And any other things NOT including the cage, water bottle and all that stuff. What I would probably spend MONTHLY.
Also, what food do you recommend for rats?
Routine monthly rat care shouldn't run you over about $25 a month for two rats. I'm using 2 rats because these social animals really shouldn't be kept in solitary confinement.
We make our own rat food, but a high quality lab block is better than a seed mix if you decide to buy food. It's generally easier to start out by using commercial food before you get into making your own. Make sure that whatever food you buy doesn't contain chemical preservatives and try to avoid sugar and artificial colors.
Buying large bags of bedding is cheaper in the long run if you have room to store it. Don't ever use cedar or pine bedding for rodents or other small animals because of serious health risks. Aspen's ok and there are several good brands of bedding you can get. Carefresh Ultra is good, SoftSorbent is okay. We use Eco bedding, which our rats seem to like the best. It's completely dust free.
Depending on how much your rats enjoy gnawing on things, you may end up buying a package of chew toys/treats every month. This is usually under $5. You can save a lot of money on hammocks by making your own out of fleece. This is especially helpful of your rats like to "customize" their hammocks by chewing them up. Toys can be a mix of pet shop toys made for rodents, cats, birds or ferrets along with safe things you find around the house.
It's always a good idea to put some money aside in case the little guys ever need to see the vet.
